The first step

The first real step toward my adventure would be to follow the trail in my camper from Norfolk, the home of Johnny Carsen to Valentine, a beautiful town by the Niobrara River. This river is know for it's tubing and Robin wants to do that some time. I will check out the possibilities on my scouting trip. The main thing I want to do is scout out bathrooms and showers. I have no idea yet how long this trip will take me but I suspect it will be more than a week given the slow relative speed of my 3 wheeler. I love the comfort of my recumbent and with 3 wheels I can carry my old backpacking gear on the back. Actually I have been researching the idea of building a camper to haul behind me which sounds like added fun.
Next time: my scouting trip.

The idea

As I faced retirement, I was thinking about what I would do during this time. Besides my many hobbies, I knew I'd be camping alot. My wife and I had recently started doing some biking on railtrails. We had done the Prairie Spirit which runs from Ottawa to Iola, as well as the Steamboat Trace in Southeastern Nebraska. Living somewhat near the Katy trail, I had been looking at it for some time as a possible trip when I retired.
Then my wife took a job in her home state of Nebraska. This state was pretty unfamiliar to me so I started looking at maps and reading books about my new home state. I found several railtrails plus my new home in the Omaha area was full of bike trails. The trail that caught my interest is called the Cowboy trail. I read two books about it, one about the trail and the other about the railroad that made the rightofway for this trail. When completed it will be the longest railtrail in the US. Right now it's 161 mile long, plenty for me for sure.
So it was settled, the Cowboy trail would be my great retirement adventure!!
